Two Month Check-up

weight: 8 lbs. 4 oz. (3%)

height: 21 inches (3%)

head: 36 cm (2%)

I can hardly believe it!  Jacob is finally the same size that Joseph was when Joseph was born.  It’s so funny to look at things that way.  We have enjoyed two whole months with this tiny little baby in our lives while two and a half years ago we were taking home a little guy the same size.

As far as his appointment goes, Jacob is growing!  However small his growth is compared to others the fact is still that he’s growing and that’s all that we could hope for.

Since his last check-up Jacob has been circumcised and lost his umbilical cord (at 6 weeks).  I had Dr. Chowdry double check those issues to make sure that everything was healing alright.  That would be the pits if we had to redo his circumcision because something wasn’t healing the right way 😦 .

We ran into a little snag though.  Unfortunately, while listening to Jacob’s little heart the doctor heard some abnormal activity.  He double and triple checked to make sure he was hearing things correctly, which he was.  He referred us to a cardiologist and said that we needed to hound them to get an appointment A.S.A.P.

The first  issue is that there’s a small valve that’s supposed to close shortly after birth.  It can take up to four weeks for it to close, but definitely not past that point.  For it to still be open two months into the game just means that it’s straining Jacob’s heart to compensate for the blood that he’s loosing through that little valve.

The second issue is that, for whatever reason, Dr Chowdry didn’t hear anything at Jacob’s last appointment (one month).  For the murmur to not be there a month ago but then to suddenly present itself at two months has him a little concerned.

I know it sounds horrible, and I’ll admit that I’m scared to death, but the doctor said that 90% of the time it’s nothing that can’t or won’t be corrected on it’s own with just time.  Still, he wants a second opinion and I thank him for that.

Check back on Wednesday to see what the verdict is.

I hope everything turns out fine. Does the pediatrician think Jacob could be smaller because of the hole in his valve? Taylor was Full-Term and only weighed 5.9 lbs. If you need a cardiologist I can give you Taylor’s doctor, but hopefully you won’t need it!

  2. Okay, so it’s only 9am at your place and I’ll come back for a verdict at a more reasonable hour. 🙂 Hoping it’s an innocent murmur that is quickly resolved…
