We’ve been to Hermosa Beach and Zion’s canyon, so this year we celebrated our annual Johnson Family Vacation in San Diego, CA (Carlsbad to be exact).
We left at about 6:00 this morning and got into the San Diego area around 12:30 pm. We made great time and what’s even better is that the kids were AMAZING in the car. We stopped once to get gas and take a potty break, but that only lasted about 15 minutes. This trip has started to ease my concerns about traveling as a family. I used to be so much work and stress to go on vacation that we never went. But with Jacob now old enough to be out of bottles and baby food there are so many less things that we have to tote around with us, which helps a lot! The only reason we brought the big massive stroller on this vacation was because we’d be at Sea World for an entire day and we wanted Jacob to be comfortable (not smashed into an umbrella).
We got to the beach house with two and a half hours to spare, so we drove around town looking for a farmer’s market that we could raid for tonight’s dinner. Each family had a meal that they had to prepare for the rest of the family and we had the first meal, Saturday’s dinner.
When we got back to the house it was open and ready for us to unload. The kids ran around the grounds looking at everything with their cousins.
We did have a few accidents while the kids were discovering where the best places would be. Joseph learned early on that the big boulders wouldn’t cooperate when it came to freeze tag, so we just kept clear of that part of the yard.
The house that we stayed at was beautiful and large enough to accommodate 9 cousins (under the age of 8), four families, two grandparents, and one pregnant woman. 21 people in all! There was room for the kids to play with toys and the adults to lounge around- all at the same time. It was nice to have so much room because then the kids were able to enjoy themselves as well and not have to stay stuck in a corner.
Another great thing about this trip was the room our family was put into. For the first time, in a very long time, I felt like we weren’t given whatever was leftover. I feel like we were actually thought of and given a room that would accommodate our family and that we could really enjoy each other in (and not kill each other 🙂 ). We had a king size bed with an adjoining bathroom. There was also an attached office that had a twin daybed and trundle for the kids to sleep in. We had more than enough room to set up the pack-n-play and to move around. It was nice to have the kids in a separate room so that Jared and I could stay up after the kids had gone to bed.
I’m really, surprisingly, looking forward to the next couple of days. I think I’m finally at a happy place to be able to just enjoy!
