Fourth Day of Christmas

I wanted to do something a little more involved for today’s craft.  I decided to make four white chocolate covered snowmen and create a platform/ holder for them.

I started with some scrap 2×4 that I had in my garage.

I measured and marked four even spots so that I’d know where to drill holes.

Measure the size of your sucker stick to see what size drill bit you need to make your hole.  For me I had to use a 7/32 bit.

Before you go any further, check to make sure that the sucker sticks fit into the holes that you just drilled.  If they do, you can keep going.  If they don’t, you need to use a larger drill bit and re-drill the holes until the sticks fit inside the holes.

Go ahead and sand down the edges of your block so that there are no splinters.

Pick your favorite wood paint (I just used a white that I already had) and paint your block using a foam paintbrush.

Depending on what kind of wood you use you may need to do two or three coats of paint.  But good news, it only takes about 10 minutes for each coat to dry.  I ended up doing three coats and it didn’t take more than 20 minutes total.

If you had more time and wanted to do something more you could always paint the block a dark black or brown and then add several top coats of white or cream.  Once everything is dry you can sand down the edges again so that the darker color pops through.

While I was waiting for the paint to dry I heated the white chocolate in a double broiler.  If you don’t have a double broiler (like me) just use a small sauce pan and fill it 2/3 full of water.  Then set a small pan or dish on top.  As the water heats up it will heat and melt the chocolate.  This makes sure that you don’t burn your chocolate or get clumps.

While the chocolate is melting, skewer three large marshmallows onto the sticks.  The stick should come about 3/4 of the way through the top marshmallow, but shouldn’t poke through it.  The marshmallows should be touching each other but don’t worry if they look weird, it will all be covered up when you dip them.

Once you dip your marshmallows in the chocolate place them on wax paper lined cookie sheet.  While they are still wet (if they’re shiny that means the chocolate hasn’t set yet) you need to put their faces on.

I used mini chocolate chips to give it a more simple look but you can use mini M&Ms or anything else that you might have.

Place your cookie sheet in the fridge for about 10 minutes so that the chocolate can set.  Once it’s set, place them in cellophane bags and tie them with coordinating ribbon.  I also placed a strip of ribbon around the block of wood.

I’m going to be making a few more of these for the kids’ teachers before the winter break!  So easy and sooo cute!
